Breeding Sheep – following Market Lambs
(Refer also to General Rules)
Rules
- Purebred animals must be identified by registry name and number, corresponding to the ear tag or tattoo number.
- The “Certificate of Veterinary Inspection” must state that the veterinarian examined the entire Flock and found no evidence of contagious or infectious disease or external parasites. The date of examination must also appear on the certificate. ALL animals from other states must be accompanied by an interstate health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian indicating and examination for health within 30 days of show.
- Important Rule - Certification by the owner and an accredited veterinarian that the identified animal(s) is (are not) known to have been exposed to scrapie.
- Important Rule - All sheep except wethers must bear an official USDA/APHIS ear tag to be exhibited at the fair. Sheep from flocks on the voluntary scrapie program must bear the official ear tag, tattoo, or electronic ear implant.
- Shipping Fever Complex immunization is recommended for all sheep, except those consigned to immediate slaughter
- A pen of Iambs consists of 2 ram lambs and 2 ewe lambs.
- A Flock consists of: 1 ram, any age; 2 ewes, 1 yr & under 2 years; and 2 ewes under 1 year.
- A breeder’s young flock consists of 1 ram lamb and 2 ewe lambs, all bred and owned by the exhibitor.
- A get of sire consists of four (4) breeding animals, any age or sexes, which are the get of one (1) sire.
- Entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis due to limited space. Sheep exhibitors are asked to use sound judgment as to the number of entries because of limited space. Space will be allocated on a square footage per animal basis with Snyder County Youth Livestock Sale entries receiving first priority, youth breeding classes receiving second priority, open breeding receiving third priority and out of county open breeding receiving fourth priority.
- Rosettes will be awarded to the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion ewe and ram in all breeds.
- An exhibitor may show: 2 fall Iambs or 2 spring Iambs; or 1 fall Lamb and 1 spring Lamb. Not more than 2 Iambs may be shown per exhibitor.
