CLASS 45 - 4-H & VOC YOUTH LIVESTOCK SALE

Livestock Sale entries and fees will be collected at time of animal tagging.

  1. Exhibitors must be members of the Snyder County 4-H Club and/or a Snyder County FFA Chapter. A 4-H member is enrolled when the member's enrollment is entered on the computerized enrollment system and approved by the county 4-H Educator. Livestock members should be enrolled by April 15 of the current year.
  2. FFA record books must be up to date and signed by the Ag Advisor and shall be presented to the Youth Livestock Sale Committee at check-in time. Books will be checked and returned immediately. 4-H animal project books must be judged at or prior to 4-H Roundup. Those failing to have project record books judged before Beaver Fair will be ineligible for competition in youth classes and also ineligible for the Youth Livestock Sale.
  3. Current health rules and regulations will apply as listed for each department in the Beaver Fair catalog. Drug and Health Rules for general/livestock listed under general rules for the Beaver Fair will also apply. Exhibitor will be liable for any animal containing drug residue at slaughter.
  4. Dairy Feeder Steers
    1. must be born after Jan 1st and before Mar 31st of the fair year.
    2. must be naturally polled or dehorned.
    3. must contain 100% dairy blood line from the major breeds, Holstein (both black & white and red & white), Jersey, Guernsey, Ayrshire, Milking Shorthorn, Brown Swiss, and Line Back.

Tagging and Weighing

  1. An alternate project animal for all species may be tagged and exhibitor's choice of animals brought to the fair.
  2. Market Steer & Dairy Feeder Steer exhibitors must bring their animals to the fairgrounds on Sat. May 21, 2011, between 9:00-11:00 a.m. for mandatory weighing and tagging. Market Steers will be weighed and tagged beginning at 9 am. Dairy Feeder Steers beginning at 9:30 with animals only needing tagged, weighed and vaccinated first, followed by all other Dairy Feeder Steers. Steer and dairy-feeder exhibitors must notify Liz Hollenbach or Steve Herman by May 1 of their intention to show.
  3. Market Lamb exhibitors must bring their animals to the fairgrounds on Monday, June 6, 2011, between 6:00-8:30 pm for mandatory weighing and tagging. Exhibitors must notify Greg Erb or Roger Lauver by June 1st of their intention to show.
  4. Market Goat exhibitors must bring their animals to the fairgrounds on Monday, June 6, 2011, between 6:00-8:30 pm for mandatory weighing and tagging. Exhibitors must notify Chris Swineford or Tammy Herman by June 1st of their intent to show.
  5. Market Swine exhibitors must notify Ken Fetterolf or Greg Erb by June 1st. A sale committee official will identify the animals by ear tag on or before June 18th.
  6. Meat Rabbit exhibitors must notify Kathy Shea by Aug. 1st. A sale committee official will identify the animals by ear tattoo on or before Aug. 20th. Any rabbits previously tattooed will be disqualified.
  7. It is strongly recommended that exhibitors have animal castration completed prior to tagging day. Animals not castrated prior to tagging will be castrated by the veterinarian on tagging day at a cost set by the vet service.
  8. Animals will be castrated by a method chosen by the exhibitor. However, if during the vet check of the animal upon arrival at fair the exhibitor must realize that animals not properly castrated will be sent home.

Fair Arrival and Check In

  1. Exhibitors may show and sell a maximum of:  1 steer; 1 dairy feeder, 2 lambs, 2 hogs, 2 goats and 4 rabbits. Three rabbits must be entered and sold as a group. A fourth rabbit may be entered and sold as a single fryer.
  2. All livestock sale animals must arrive at the fairground on Sunday between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm. Only the maximum number of animals eligible to be exhibited per species may be brought to the fair grounds.  Animals designated as alternates may not be weighed if those chosen do not meet weight requirements.
  3. All livestock will be weighed at the fair on Sunday according to the following schedule:
        - Rabbits 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.
        - Market Steers beginning at 4:00 p.m., followed by Dairy Feeder Steers, Market Lambs, Market Goats & Market Swine.
  4. There will not be a reweigh for underweight/overweight animals unless the Exhibitor questions the animal weight and requests a re-weigh. Exhibitors requesting a reweigh must make the request known within three weighs after his/her original weighing.
  5. Weights of animals must be within a specified range at weigh-in as follows:
        - Market Hog (barrows or gilts only) 210-290 lbs
        - Market Lamb (wethers or ewes only) 75-140 lbs
        - Market goats 60 - 110 lbs.
        - Market Steers 900-1400 lbs.
        - Dairy Feeder Steer (steers only) 350-650 lbs.
        - Rabbits (pen of three) not more than 70 days old & 3-5 lbs each
        - Rabbits (single fryer) not more than 70 days old weighing 3- 5 lbs.
  6. Weight classes will be designated after weigh-in due to weight variances and number of entries within each weight division.

Sale

  1. Any and all animals that are not taken to the show ring due to the animal not being controllable will not be sold Thursday night during the sale.
  2. Sale time will be Thursday of the fair at 7:00 p.m.
  3. Underweight or overweight animals will be sold at the end of the Livestock Sale.
  4. Sale animals are to be shown and presented for show/sale by the exhibitor. In case of two entries in the same class or illness of the exhibitor, another 4-H or FFA member may show the animal. Any 4-H or FFA member unable to show their animal, either at the show or sale, for any reason must submit in writing to the sale committee seeking permission to have them shown by another 4-H or FFA member. An adult may not present animals entered in a youth competition to the judge.

CLASS 57 - 4-H & VOC. PROJECT RECORD BOOKS

Vocational Project Book Entry Guidelines

  1. Entries are limited to agriculture students of Juniata, Mifflin, Snyder, Union and Northumberland counties with projects meeting state standards for scope.
  2. No project books are eligible for awards if records are not complete as of September 8th. Except where a project has ended prior to that date, in which case the project book should be completed.
  3. The books will be scored for completeness, accuracy, neatness, yield, and degree of ownership.
  4. Entry tags should be attached to the front of each book.
  5. Each entry must be in separate folders so judges may score them individually. Only one (1) class entry per folder or notebook will be accepted. Where folders contain more than one enterprise, the exhibitor must clearly Identify which enterprise is to be scored by attaching a note to the front cover.
  6. Vo-Ag record books must have tab dividers to separate the sections (planning, enterprise, summary, and activities found in each enterprise book.
  7. Books not meeting these rules will not be judged.
  8. FFA exhibitors are limited to (1) one enterprise book entry, which must be submitted in its own folder. Those entering a folder with more than one enterprise will be disqualified.

CLASS 64 - 4-H & VOC. FORESTRY SKILLS CONTEST

(Register one (1) hour prior to the starting time)

RULES

  1. Contestants must have participated in a safety seminar prior to the contest date.
  2. Contestants will be disqualified for any unsafe practice or any violation of rules or any breach of good sportsmanship.
  3. Contestants are limited to four (4) individuals from each school per contest.
  4. Contestants must wear suitable clothing.
  5. All decisions of the judges will be final.
  6. Standard logging tools only will be used.
  7. Contest is limited to students of agriculture from Snyder, Union, Northumberland, Mifflin, and Juniata county area, except Two Man Crosscut, Two-Man log Balancing and Two-Man log Rolling will have an adult division.
  8. A waiver of liability must be submitted to contest chairman one hour prior to the start of the events.
  9. Parental permission forms must be completed and presented to the judges prior to the start of the contest (These forms are required for the student division only, not for the adult events).
  10. Pre-registration for this event should include the 'participant's name, address, school and a listing of each event that each contestant plans to participate in. Registration must be received on the day of the event one hour prior to starting time.
  11. For all two-man events the premium is paid out to each participant competing and is not split between the two participants.

CHAINSAW CONTEST

  1. Contestants will cut two squares from a 6" cant placed on a set of bucks.
  2. All cuts must be made with the bottom of the saw bar with a downward motion.
  3. A partial cut square will not count.
  4. The shortest time will determine the winner.
  5. Time will be from the official start until the second square hits the ground and the saw engine is shut off and set on the ground. Not more than eight (8") of the cant shall be used for two (2) cuts.
  6. All saws will be provided by a dealer. Saws will be of medium size, approximately 3.5 cubic inch engines.
  7. Contestants will be given a one (1) minute period to familiarize themselves with the saw. During the one (1) minute period the contestants may start the saw engine and warm it up.
  8. The saw must be sitting on the ground to start the engine. Contestants must be standing in an upright position when starting the engine. In the event of an engine stall, the saw must be returned to the ground to be restarted.
  9. Safety equipment is mandatory and must be provided by the contestant. Equipment shall include hard hat, ear protection, approved eye protection, chain saw chaps, gloves, and leather work boots.

TWO-MAN CROSSCUT CONTEST

  1. Contestants will cut two (2) squares from a six (6) inch cant placed on a set of bucks.
  2. The shortest time wi1l determine the winner.
  3. Time will be from the official start to the completion of the second cut. Not more than eight (8") of the cant may be used to make the two (2) cuts.
  4. A partial cut square will not count.
  5. Safety equipment is mandatory and must be provided by the contestant.
  6. Equipment shall include: hard hat, gloves, and leather work boots.

TWO-MAN LOG ROLLING CONTEST

  1. Contestants will furnish their own peavies or cant hooks.
  2. No other tools, feet or hands shall be allowed to aid in rolling the log.
  3. Contestants will not witness prior rolls.
  4. Contestants will return the log to the starting point.
  5. The shortest time will determine the winner.
  6. A fifteen (15) second penalty will be imposed for each stake pushed over forty-five (45) degrees.
  7. Safety equipment is mandatory and must be provided by the contestant. Equipment shall include hard hat, gloves, and leather work boots.
